Illinois VW School Bus Program

Illinois EPA is offering VW funds for the replacement of existing diesel school buses with new all-electric school buses. This is a valuable opportunity for the BEAST

Eligible Projects
Replacement of class 4-8, type A-D diesel school buses (engine MY 2009 or older) with new, all-electric school buses. 

Eligible Vehicle

  • Scrappage is required. 
  • The program will also fund related charging infrastructure if necessary. 

Eligible Locations in Illinois
Priority Area 1 (Chicago Metro):
Counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will, and Oswego Township in Kendall and Aux Sable and Goose Lake Townships in Grundy.

  • Applicants in priority area 1 must certify that the existing diesel school bus has been in operation in priority area 1 for at least 80% of its operational hours each year in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
  • The new school bus must operate at least 80% of its hours in priority area 1 each year for five years from the inservice date. 

Priority Area 2 (Metro-East):
Counties of Madison and St. Clair.

  • Applicants in priority area 2 must certify that the existing diesel school bus has been in operation in priority area 2 for at least 80% of its operational hours each year in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
  • The new school bus must operate at least 80% of its hours in priority area 2 each year for five years from the inservice date.

Total: $6,500,000.00
Max award: $6,500,000.00

Metro-East Area:
Total: $2,500,000.00
Max award: $2,500,000.00

Required Cost Share (applies to both priority areas and both bus and charging costs)
For non-government applicants: 50% 
For government applicants and non-government applicants under contract with a public school district: 25%
